Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann is an opera in four acts where Hoffman recounts three tales of his tragic mishaps in love over copious amounts of drink. With his constant companion the Muse (disguised as Nicklausse), he travels through his dizzying memories, which spiral from romantic to dark as each of his loves (all a facet of the same dream woman) meet their unique demises.
